  • FG Begins Data Capturing of Transporters Nationwide

The Federal Government is said to have commenced data capturing for commercial transporters across the country.

It was gathered that the initiative was conceived by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

Transporters under the aegis of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association, stated that the initiative would help curb criminal activities being perpetuated on roads.

Speaking at press briefing in Abuja, the National President, ACOMORAN, Babangida Maihula, said the Federal Government had started capturing the data of the association’s members as well as those in other arms of the transportation sector.

He noted that a standing committee made up of officials from security agencies, road transport unions and parastatals/ministries of government had already been established to ensure that the exercise succeeds.

“This programme is going to capture and address the many concerns of commuters and operators in the land transportation sector, especially as it relates to security and curbing criminal activities on our roads. It is a holistic programme and we are meeting our members to expatiate on the gains of this initiative,” Maihula said.

He noted that the association had initially commenced a data capturing exercise for just its members, but had to key into the larger programme of the Federal Government as spearheaded by the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

Providing an insight into the initial programme embarked upon by ACOMORAN, Maihula stated that the prevalent state of insecurity and other similar challenges in Nigeria the country had made it imperative for the deployment of radio frequency identification technology by the association to capture and store members’ biometric data across the nation.

He said the initiative was designed to enable the association to have accurate database of its members, which would serve as a repository platform with comprehensive asset tagging of motorcycles and tricycles in order to deter criminal activities.

The association commended the Federal Government and its agencies for expanding the scope of the data capturing exercise and urged stakeholders to key into the programme in order to make it achieve its goal.
