- Banking Sector Vital to Economic Growth – Shittu
The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, says the banking sector is vital to economic growth and players in the sector must be celebrated.
Shittu said this at the launch of a book titled, ‘’Beyond the banking hall.’’
The book was written in honour of a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Alhaji Amusa Otiti, who turned 90 years old last month.
The book was written by a seasoned author, television producer and administrator, Mrs. Patricia Otuedon-Arawore.
Shittu said there was a need to celebrate Otiti because of his immense contributions to central banking and economic growth.
He said, “We know what banking and financial institutions mean to every country. Any country that does not have strong banking and financial services is not likely to be able to grow economically.
“So, if we appreciate the crucial importance of banking and financial services, we need to celebrate the people who have been involved one way or the other. They are to be celebrated. We need to celebrate the contributions of our Baba (Amusa Otiti). We must also appreciate them for their humanity.”
The book launch was attended by eminent personalities including Chief Akintola Williams and the Chairman of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, Dr. Olawale Babalakin.
A former Registrar of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Mr. Bayo Adenubi, who was the book reviewer, said there was a need for people to read the book and learn great lessons.
He said, “The book is yet another delightful opportunity to celebrate this banking guru who turned 90 years of age about a month ago. I wish to say from the outset that the author is well respected and the book is a well written one. It is a simple, lucid and enjoyable prose. Considering that the author had a very short time to put it together, we must congratulate her.”
A foundation called Alhaji Amusa Oladimeji Gbadamosi Otiti Foundation was launched in honour of the respected banker.
Babalakin, who was represented by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Tola Oshodi, launched the foundation.
