- Customs Seize N137.8m Contraband in Edo
The Nigeria Customs Service, Compliance Team, Zone C, Benin City, Edo State Command said it seized contrabands worth N137.8m in November.
The leader of the team, Ahmed Azarema, made this known while briefing journalists in Benin, Edo State about the activities of the team.
He said that the seizures were made possible through intelligence gathering by the team, which was led by Musa Ije.
He listed the seized items as fake and expired pharmaceutical products such as 90 cartons of Tramadol (New Royal), 400 cartons of Tramadol (Quick Action), 165 cartons of Tramadol (Really Extra,) which were reportedly imported from India.
He said that 655 cartons of fake drugs were seized while 175,000 packs of illicit drugs valued at N33.4m were intercepted between September and November this year.
Other items seized from smugglers, according to a statement from the command, are cartons of frozen foods worth N38.3m; 200 cartons of Croaker fish worth N3.3m.
Also, two trucks laden with 600 bags of foreign parboiled rice worth N15.3m, falsely declared as building materials were said to have been intercepted.
Azarema was quoted as saying that five defendants involved in the smuggling activities had been arrested.
