Globacom, the third entrant into the GSM space, this week, celebrated its 14th year anniversary, with lots of appreciation to its over 37 million subscribers who have remained with the network of choice without wavering.

Globacom rolled out its commercial services in August 2003, with per second billing on its network; two years after the first two GSM operators operated with per minute billing on their networks. Since then, Globacom has been playing strong in data services as well as voice.

To further appreciate Nigerians on its 14th anniversary, Globacom has rolled out a series of free access telephone lines to the entire Federal Civil Service of Nigeria as part of its contribution to the productivity of public servants in Nigeria.

The lines are programmed under a Closed User Group (CUG) platform which gives all civil servants seamless yet affordable communication opportunities within and outside the service. The lines will also be documented in a formal directory with the names and ministries of domicile of all public servants at the federal level.

Globacom said in an address at the unveiling of the scheme in Abuja recently, that the relationship between telecommunications and the civil service in any growing nation cannot be over-emphasised.

“For one, telecommunications enable nations to improve the productivity and efficiency of their workforce because employees can deploy voice and data services to make calls, send or receive email, browse websites, conduct research, access databases or participate in conference calls,” the company added.

According to the network, workers do not have to switch between ranges of different communication devices; they rather enjoy the opportunity to save precious executive time and reduce organisations’ communications equipment costs. In addition to this, productivity, efficiency and passion for excellence are kindled owing to the fact that tedium of work is lessened, while greater results are obtained in the process.

The Head of service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, in her remarks at the event, commended Globacom for the offer. She described the brand as a truly Nigerian company whose activities reflect its deep commitment to the welfare of the populace professionally and in their personal endeavour.

Globacom, she said, “is a true pride of the nation”. She added that the civil service of the Federation will avail itself of the scheme to improve on its productivity and inter-ministerial relations for the enhancement of the nation’s policy formulations and executions for the good of the entire citizenry.
