- Courier Operators Oppose 2.5% Annual Operating Levy
Courier operators have opposed the proposed annual operating levy as contained in a bill seeking to excise regulatory functions from the Nigerian Postal Services and establish a new regulatory authority.
The operators, who spoke under umbrella of the Association of Nigeria Courier Operators, presented their position at a public hearing on the Nigerian Postal Service Act (repeal and re-enactment) Bill conducted by the Senate Committee on Communications in Abuja on Wednesday.
Represented by General Secretary, Mr. Okey Uba, and Managing Director of Xpress Partners Limited, Mr. Oladipo Akinyele, ANCO said the imposition of 2.5 per cent levy on the operators’ annual turnovers would not allow courier firms to thrive, especially when the Internet had eroded the profitability of the industry.
They rather proposed the payment of one per cent of profit to the coffers of the Postal Regulatory Commission, which the new bill plans to establish. They also opposed the current annual renewal of operating licences.
