Professor of Accounting and Finance, Babcock University, Rufus Akintoye, has been conferred with the 2017 Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria’s Merit Award.

A statement on Tuesday stated that the honour was conferred on Akintoye and others during the 2017 annual dinner and awards of ICAN in Lagos.

In his address, the 52nd President of ICAN, Mr. Titus Soetan, congratulated the recipients of the awards, including members and non-members of the institute, and corporate bodies, and expressed appreciation to the award and dinner committee for a job well done.

He explained that all the award recipients were carefully chosen based on their antecedents and success in their chosen fields as well as their contributions to the growth and sustainability of the accountancy profession.

Soetan urged all the awardees not to relent but should continue to keep the flag flying, especially by taking accountancy to more enviable heights and bailing the country out of recession.

Other recipients of awards at the event were the former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwummi Ambode; Rev. Peter Obadan; and Prof. Kabiru Dandago.

According to the statement, notable companies and organisations that received the award in the corporate body category included the Bank of Industry, Federal Inland Revenue Service and PricewaterhouseCoopers, among others.

In his remark after receiving the award, Akintoye expressed appreciation to God for making it possible for him to be the winner of the 2017 merit award in the members’ category.

While describing ICAN as a highly referred and prestigious body, he added that the best honour that could be given to any accountant in Nigeria was recognition by the institute.

Akintoye advised youths to be determined and focused, not minding various obstacles on their way, saying that challenges were surmountable if only one was determined and focused.

“I can’t imagine various odd jobs I have engaged in, all in my aspiration to become great in life. I can recall the time I declined admission offered by a Nigerian university and resorted to joining The Polytechnic Ibadan, because I knew at that time that I would not have the opportunity to combine academics with university education, but can manage while at the polytechnic”, he said.
