- FG Unveils 10-year Food, Nutrition Strategy
The Federal Government on Tuesday unveiled a 10-year food security and nutrition strategy for the country’s agricultural sector.
The government said the document, which was titled: ‘Agricultural Sector Food Security and Nutrition Strategy 2016-2025’, would mainstream nutrition into all the value chains of agriculture in Nigeria.
The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Abubakar Hafiz, unveiled the document at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who could not make it to the event.
Explaining some of the key issues to be addressed under the strategy, the Senior Advisor on Food Security and Nutrition to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Adeyinka Onabolu, said the document had eight focus areas that dealt extensively with how to effectively ensure food security for Nigeria.
She said, “This strategy is mainstreaming nutrition into all the agricultural value chain. This means that at the point of production we must have nutrition consideration in mind. We must consider the kind of fertilizer we use in our soil, as well as the kind of herbicides applied on our inputs or crops.”
