  • Lagos Rehabilitates 1,850 Roads in 12 Months

The Lagos State Government says it has completed the rehabilitation of 1,850 roads in the last one year as part of measures to ensure free flow of traffic within the state.

The General Manager, Lagos State Public Works Corporation, Mr. Ayotunde Sodeinde, said this in a statement, adding that this became necessary to have a pothole-free road during the 2017 rainy season.

He said the rehabilitation was in line with the directive of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, to the agency when he launched the ‘Operation fix all roads’ in 2015 upon assumption of office.

Sodeinde, who is also Special Adviser to the state governor, said the state government was also disturbed by the Nigerian Metrological Agency’s prediction of heavy rainfall for Lagos State with its attendant consequences, especially on roads.

This, he stressed, prompted the LSPWC to intensify efforts and ensure the rehabilitation of most roads in poor state ahead of the predicted heavy rains.

He listed some of the roads fixed by the corporation within the 12 months as Ikotun-Ejigbo Road; the bad portion of Regina Mundi in Mushin Oloosa, Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island; Metal Box Road in Ogba; ACME Road inward Akilo in Ogba; Pen Cinema – Oba Ogunji Road in Agege; Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ile-Epo, Oke-Koto Alfa-Nla in Agege, Noforija-Odomola in Epe, among others.

Sodeinde also stated that the state government recently approved the construction of additional 200 roads across the 57 councils in the state in order to bring development closer to the people at the grass roots.

The new road projects, according to him, are in addition to the 181 local government roads to be constructed by the state government in collaboration with the local council development areas, which brings the total number of roads to be constructed in 2017 to 381 roads.

Sodeinde reiterated the corporation’s commitment to rid all roads in the state of potholes in order to enhance vehicular movement.

The statement quoted him as saying, “The corporation has been maintaining federal roads; and it will continue to do so. Our main objective is to make roads in the state pothole-free so as to ease vehicular movement and reduce the stress frequently experienced by the people on Lagos roads as a result of heavy traffic.”
