- NPA Lauds Customs on Security
The Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Ms Hadiza Usman, has expressed appreciation for the tight security network established by the Nigeria Customs Service.
Usman specifically commended the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Retd.) and his management team for measures put in place that resulted in the recent seizure of a container carrying 661 pump action rifles.
According to her, the fact that the controversial 40-feet container manifested to be carrying steel doors had exited the port before it was timely intercepted somewhere around Mile 2 in Lagos was a proof that the Customs management had put in place more than one layer of security arrangement to ensure that nothing dangerous escaped the eagle eye of the service.
“Without this interception, one cannot imagine what could have happened to the lives and properties of innocent Nigerians,” she said.
She urged that the scope of investigation in respect of the deadly cargo should be broad and thorough, while enjoining all the security agencies serving at the port to be extra vigilant to avoid a reoccurrence of such incident.
Usman also enjoined whistle-blowers to avail themselves of platforms already put in place by the NPA to ensure timely presentation of information and intelligence needed to enable the authorities to nip such acts of illegality in the bud.
