The President and Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria, Anthony Arabome, has said that the institute is working with the government to address unemployment challenges in the country.

He said this during the 48th annual national conference of the institute with the theme ‘People, potential and possibilities’ in Abuja, according to a statement by the CIPM.

“In fulfilment of our mandate of being the foremost people management institute in the country, the CIPM initiated a project aimed at proffering workable solutions to one of the cardinal commitments on the agenda of the government tagged ‘Management of national unemployment challenge’”, he said.

He said that the idea of the MNUC study was conceived by the leadership of the CIPM as a response to the social, economic and political challenges of managing unemployment in Nigeria.

Arabome explained that this assignment was undertaken by a seven-person committee headed by a fellow and one-time Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the institute, Dr. Musa Rabiu, with a view to collaborating with the Federal Government in providing sustainable solutions to the unemployment challenges in the country.

According to him, the MNUC project involves surveys, data collection and conclusive analysis in collaboration with other stakeholder groups across the geopolitical zones and different sectors.

Arabome said that the 2016 conference was unique in many ways, and that it offered human resource professionals, business leaders, teams and organisations thought-provoking sessions to challenge, boost and stimulate thoughts and the craftsmanship of unleashing human talent potential, in ways that would make it every organisation’s greatest asset.

He said that part of the activities were the HR Best Practice Award (to recognise exceptional HR practices after reviewing the totality of an organisation’s HR practice); and the HR Optimisation awards, among other programmes.

He also said that the CIPM was taking purposeful steps aimed at professionalising the practice of human resource, and that it was engaging government and building partnership in some areas.

The areas, he added, were recognition of its membership and professional certification as the minimum standard for the practice of human resource management in both public and private sectors of the economy as well as professionalisation of human resource management in the public sector at the local, state and federal levels.
