- FG Inaugurates N510bn Water, Sanitation, Hygiene Programme
The Federal Government on Monday inaugurated the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme, which is to gulp about N510bn.
According to the government, N219.1bn out of the total sum will be invested in the provision of public toilets to boost sanitation across the country.
In the PEWASH Programme Strategy document for 2016 to 2030, which was officially inaugurated by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo in Abuja, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources stated that a total of N290.5bn would be invested in water supply.
It also noted that the cost for ensuring access to water, sanitation and hygiene in schools, primary health centres, motor parks and market centres was estimated at about N133bn for the period 2016 to 2030.
Speaking at the event, Osinbajo stated that the PEWASH was an initiative developed to address the challenges being faced in the water supply and sanitation sub-sector.
He observed that the PEWASH would prepare a good foundation towards achieving Goal Six of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by the year 2030.
