The new UK. prime minister, Theresa May said the country is eager to negotiate a free trade deal with Australia as soon as possible.

The prime minister who took office 19 days ago, after the U.K. relinquishes her membership of the European Union said she will meet with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the G-20 summit planned for Hangzhou, China in September to discuss the terms of the deal.

“I have been very clear that this government will make a success of our exit from the European Union,” said May in an e-mailed statement. “One of the ways we will do this is by embracing the opportunities to strike free trade deals with our partners across the globe.”

After the decision to leave the European Union, the UK has been trying to renegotiate trade deals with allies in which full access to its market will no longer be given.

According to May, Liam Fox, the new Secretary of State for International Trade will be “taking this forward in the weeks and months ahead.”
