The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of employment into the Edo State civil service due to irregularities by certain commissions, boards, and government agencies in the state.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Umar Ikhilor, and released by the State Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Friday, November 22, the Governor accused heads of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of conducting unauthorized recruitment exercises, including issuing backdated letters of appointment.
The statement reads “The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has received reports of clandestine activities being perpetuated by some commissions, boards, parastatals, and agencies of government in the state. Preliminary investigations reveal that these bodies have been issuing backdated letters of employment to their cronies without following due process.”
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to merit-based employment, emphasizing the importance of fairness and equity.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this administration upholds the principles of fairness and equity, which require that all employment exercises be merit-based, competitive, and accessible to all Edo indigenes.”
As part of the suspension order, Governor Okpebholo directed a comprehensive review of all recruitment exercises carried out by the previous administration led by Godwin Obaseki between May and November 2024.
The statement further stated:
“In light of the foregoing and to arrest this ugly trend, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has directed the immediate suspension of all employment processes and a review of all appointments carried out since May 2024 by commissions, boards, parastatals, and agencies of government.
“Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are to note and comply with the above directive.”
