MTN Nigeria’s Advertising Spending Jumps 73% to N56.47 Billion
MTN Nigeria Communications Plc increased its advertising, sponsorship and sales promotion expenditure by 73.3% to N56.47 billion in the nine months ended September 30, 2026.
The telecommunications company spent an additional N23.89 billion on marketing-related activities during the period, according to its unaudited financial statements.
The increase outpaced the company’s 23.6% revenue growth, indicating a faster expansion in promotional expenditure as MTN continued to strengthen its position in Nigeria’s telecommunications market.
A breakdown of the results showed that advertising, sponsorship and sales promotion expenses reached N21.35 billion in the third quarter alone, up from N11.97 billion in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
This represents an increase of 78.4% with the July-to-September period accounting for approximately 37.8% of the company’s total marketing expenditure in the first nine months of the year.
The higher expenditure came as MTN expanded its subscriber base and recorded stronger demand for mobile data services.
The company’s total subscribers increased to 94.7 million, while active data subscribers reached 57.2 million, supported by growing internet usage and increased demand for digital connectivity.
Data revenue rose by 35.8% to N2.68 trillion from N1.98 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025, reinforcing the growing importance of internet services to the company’s business.
Although the financial statements did not provide a detailed breakdown of individual advertising campaigns, the increase in promotional expenditure occurred alongside continued investment in customer acquisition, network expansion and digital services.
The spending also reflects the financial scale required to maintain brand visibility in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, where operators compete for subscribers, data consumption and customer loyalty.
Beyond advertising, MTN recorded higher distribution-related expenses during the period.
Commission expenses increased by 24.3% to N214.38 billion from N172.45 billion, representing an additional N41.93 billion.
Combined advertising, sponsorship, sales promotion and commission expenses reached N270.85 billion, compared with N205.03 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.
This represents an increase of approximately 32.1% in the two expense categories.
Despite the higher marketing and distribution costs, MTN maintained strong earnings growth.
Revenue increased to N4.61 trillion from N3.73 trillion, while operating profit rose to approximately N1.99 trillion from N1.44 trillion.
Profit after tax also increased by 55.3% to N1.17 trillion, supported by higher service revenue and improved operating performance.
The company’s advertising expenditure represented approximately 1.2% of total revenue during the period, compared with 0.9% in the corresponding period of 2025.
The increase suggests that MTN allocated a larger proportion of its revenue to advertising and promotional activities, even as the business recorded substantial growth in profitability.
For investors, the development highlights the rising cost of marketing and customer engagement within Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
However, the financial statements do not establish how much additional revenue or subscriber growth was directly attributable to the higher promotional expenditure.
The effectiveness of MTN’s increased marketing investment will therefore depend on its ability to sustain customer growth, strengthen data usage and generate additional revenue from its expanding subscriber base.
