Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Maduabuchukwu Obiano (born 8 August 1955), has passed away in London following a prolonged illness. He was 70 years old.
Obiano served as the 4th democratically elected Governor of Anambra State from 17 March 2014 until 17 March 2022, succeeding Mr. Peter Obi and preceding Mr. Charles Soludo.
Earlier in his career, Obiano worked in the banking sector, rising through roles at Fidelity Bank Plc after joining from Chevron Nigeria, where he had served as Chief Internal Auditor.
His professional background provided the technical foundation for his entry into politics.
His eight-year governorship was marked by policy emphasis on commercial infrastructure, security enhancements and increasing Anambra’s internally generated revenue.
However, the end of his tenure was followed by investigations into alleged financial irregularities by federal anti-corruption agencies.
Obiano’s passing brings to an end a distinctive chapter of leadership in Anambra State. His legacy — both the advancement of infrastructure and the governance controversies — will continue to influence the state’s investment climate, policy direction and political dynamics in the South-East region.
Further details on funeral arrangements and official statements from the Anambra State Government and family are expected in the coming days.
