US Embassy Announces New Short-Term Visa Regime for Nigeria

The United States has introduced a revised visa regime for Nigeria, limiting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas to single-entry status with a validity period of three months.

The new directive, which took effect on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, was disclosed by the US Embassy in Abuja in a statement outlining updates to the country’s reciprocal visa policy.

According to the statement, the policy adjustment aligns with the United States Department of State’s global reciprocity framework, which is subject to periodic review and modifications based on international standards and bilateral agreements.

Under the new arrangement, Nigerians seeking non-immigrant visas will largely be issued visas valid for one entry within a three-month window. Visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid until their stated expiration date and will not be affected by the new rules.

The embassy noted that the decision forms part of efforts to maintain the integrity of the US immigration system and is consistent with standard global practices on visa reciprocity.

“The United States Department of State has announced updates to its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, impacting several countries, including Nigeria,” the statement reads in part.

“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.”

The embassy clarified that visa reciprocity is an ongoing process and may be adjusted to increase or decrease permitted entries and the duration of validity in the future.

Key conditions influencing visa issuance include secure travel documentation, effective management of visa overstays, and credible information-sharing frameworks between Nigeria and the United States to strengthen security and public safety.

The embassy commended the Nigerian government for steps taken by its immigration and security agencies to meet international best practices and expressed commitment to continuous engagement to address remaining compliance gaps.

“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity, keeping both our countries safer and stronger,” the statement added.
