British-Nigerian politician Florence Eshalomi has been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria, the second Nigerian to hold the position.
The appointment is part of the UK strategy to strengthen economic ties with Nigeria and attract investment.
Confirming her new role on X, Eshalomi expressed her commitment to deepening the UK-Nigeria economic partnership.
“It is an honour to have been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria.
“I’m looking forward to building on my close ties with Nigeria to promote a strong and flourishing economic relationship between our two great nations.
“I am looking forward to strengthening the UK’s relationship with Nigeria to explore shared growth and opportunities for both countries,” she wrote.
The announcement was also confirmed by the UK’s Business and Trade Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, who highlighted the significance of Eshalomi’s appointment in advancing British business interests in Nigeria.
“I’ve launched a new team of trade envoys who will use their experience, expertise, and knowledge to unlock new markets around the world for British businesses, attract investment into the UK, and ultimately drive economic growth,” Reynolds said.
Eshalomi, 44, is a Member of Parliament representing the Vauxhall and Camberwell Green constituency.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political and International Studies with Law from Middlesex University and has been actively involved in legislative matters concerning trade, investment and international relations.
Her appointment comes at a time when Nigeria and the UK are seeking to expand bilateral trade relations.
With Nigeria positioned as one of Africa’s largest economies, Eshalomi’s role is expected to facilitate new business opportunities, encourage investment and strengthen commercial partnerships between the two nations.
The UK’s trade envoy program is designed to enhance business engagements in key markets with envoys playing a critical role in promoting British trade and investment interests globally.
The appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage her experience and connections in both the UK and Nigeria to foster stronger economic collaboration.
