FG, Transport Unions Sign MOU to Slash Interstate Fares By 50%

The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with transport unions to reduce transportation fares by 50 percent for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Transportation, Olujimi Oyetomi, and obtained by Investors King on Thursday, December 19, the FG announced that the 50 percent reduction will affect interstate transport only.

This initiative, according to Oyetomi will enable Nigerians to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their loved ones without feeling the burden of transportation, especially with the economic hardship in the country.

He said, “To commence the 2024 Yuletide road transportation, passengers will board buses to their destinations for only 50% of fares, as declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Adeleye Adeoye disclosed that travelers from Abuja and Lagos (Oshodi) will pay only half the price for their destinations.

The event was attended by key transport stakeholders, including; the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, the Association of Luxurious Bus Owners of Nigeria and God is Good Motors, and top government officials.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information Idris Mohammed on Monday announced plans by the FG to offer Nigerians traveling by train during this season free train services starting from December 20, 2024, until January 5, 2025.

He urged Nigerians to take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy the festive season.
