Sanwo-Olu Warns Landlords Against Rent Hikes as New Roads Open in Ifako-Ijaiye
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged landlords and landowners in the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area to allow residents to fully enjoy the benefits of the newly constructed Abiola/Ajayi/Ogba and Obawole/Iju-Ishaga roads.
In his address on Monday, December 9, during the inauguration of the 643-metre road, Sanwo-Olu specifically warned property owners in the area against burdening tenants or shop occupants with rent increases.
He stressed that the purpose of the new infrastructure is to enhance the quality of life for residents, not to impose additional financial burdens.
The newly constructed roads, which include a bridge with slip roads, were started on October 24, 2022.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the infrastructure will ease movement for commuters by providing a critical connection and replacing a swampy area where a wooden bridge was previously used, often for a fee.
Urging landlords and landowners to avoid exploiting the project for personal gain, Sanwo-Olu stated, “I want to appeal to landlords and landowners, do not increase your rents or land prices. The essence of this infrastructure is to bring relief to the people, not to create further hardship.”
The governor also directed community leaders to ensure the new bridge is not misused as a dumping site.
“Please ensure the residents can enjoy the benefits after enduring years of environmental challenges. Kabiyesi, kindly ensure this bridge is not used as a dumping site,” Sanwo-Olu added.
He reiterated his commitment to resolving longstanding community issues, including flooding and commuting challenges.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Mr. Olufemi Daramola, reaffirmed the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to completing all projects initiated for the benefit of Lagosians.
In addition, Sanwo-Olu commissioned the Alapere pedestrian bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area, which was reconstructed following its destruction in a December 2023 accident.
