The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the 18 local government council chairmen in the state to submit their statements of account, covering the period from 2023 to date, to the Assets Verification Committee (AVC) for auditing.

In a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Tuesday, December 3, Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

He directed that the required statements of account be submitted to the AVC through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The governor called on all stakeholders to unite as one family for the benefit of the Edo people. He assured the council chairmen of his willingness to work closely with them.

“I have listened to the ALGON Chairman keenly. The Governor is a leader for all of us. Election has come and gone, and we are now one family. The Governor has asked me to assure you of this and that we will work together closely,” the statement read.

Governor Okpebholo also highlighted the formation of the Assets Verification Committee and the importance of its role in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

“It is critical for the committee to have access to the statements of accounts for all 18 local governments to ensure effective and efficient auditing,” Itua stated.

The Governor’s directive was issued shortly after a courtesy visit by the chairmen of the 18 local government areas, led by the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Edo State Chapter, and Orhionmwon Local Government Area Chairman, Newman Ugiagbe.

During the visit, the chairmen pledged their loyalty to Governor Okpebholo’s administration and vowed to support his policies and programmes.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Ugiagbe said “We are here to congratulate the Governor and Deputy Governor on the mandate given to them by the people of Edo State. We pledge our loyalty and readiness to implement your policies at the grassroots to deliver the dividends of democracy.”

Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has initiated significant reforms, including auditing and scrutinizing several government offices and sectors, particularly those under the previous administration.
