SEPLAT Energy Advocates Gas as Nigeria’s Immediate Energy Solution

SEPLAT Energy Plc, a leading indigenous energy company, has underscored the pivotal role of gas development.

During the 2024 Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja, Mr. Effiong Okon, SEPLAT’s Director of New Energy, emphasized gas as a clear and immediate solution to the nation’s energy needs.

Mr. Okon highlighted the multifaceted benefits of gas development, citing its relevance in power generation, liquefied natural gas exports, compressed natural gas production, and various industrial processes like fertilizer and liquefied petroleum gas production.

He emphasized that gas could be leveraged to address acute housing and infrastructure shortages and reduce the significant health hazards associated with biomass cooking.

Moreover, Mr. Okon pointed out that increasing reliance on gas could help decrease dependence on petrol and decarbonize domestic transport fuel, thereby promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship.

To ensure the success of a sustainable gas development program in Nigeria, Mr. Okon proposed several key strategies.

These include enhancing bankability and access to low-cost capital, embracing technology such as the Internet of Things and smart metering to reduce technical and commercial losses, and implementing technology-enabled revenue collection mechanisms.

At the Nigeria International Energy Summit 2024, SEPLAT Energy was recognized for its outstanding contributions to the sector, receiving the prestigious Gas Infrastructure Project of the Year award.

Mr. Okon accepted the award on behalf of the company, reaffirming SEPLAT’s commitment to driving innovation and excellence in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
