The Lagos State government has taken decisive action by sealing the Alaba International Market due to issues related to poor waste disposal, failure to settle waste bills, and violations of environmental sanitation regulations.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, through his official social media account on Monday.
Operatives of the Nigerian police in the state supervised the sealing of this renowned electronics products market.
The closure of Alaba International Market was prompted by its failure to adhere to the state’s regulations on proper waste disposal and other essential environmental practices.
Mr. Wahab shared images of the sealed market on social media, saying, “Alaba International Market, Ojo, has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills, and gross environmental sanitation offenses.”
It’s important to note that this isn’t the first instance of the Lagos State government closing prominent markets within the state for noncompliance with waste disposal and environmental practice laws.
Recent actions included the sealing of Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market, all in a bid to enforce strict adherence to environmental regulations.
These measures underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and environmentally responsible Lagos, urging businesses and market operators to prioritize waste management and compliance with established laws to ensure a healthier and more sustainable urban environment.
