President Tinubu Advocates Strengthened Cross-Sectoral Partnership with EU on Democracy and Economic Growth

President Bola Tinubu called for the enhancement of cross-sectoral cooperation between Nigeria and the European Union (EU).

This strengthening of partnerships is to be founded on the principles of democracy, the rule of law, and freedom.

The President’s remarks were made during a reception for an EU delegation led by Ms Jutta Urpilainen, EU Commissioner in charge of International Partnerships.

President Tinubu warmly welcomed the recent signing of eight financing agreements between Nigeria and the EU under the “EU Global Gateway in Nigeria” initiative, emphasizing the importance of these accords.

Democracy, he emphasized, is a precious and challenging process, but one that must be upheld and continuously fought for.

Tinubu further highlighted the significance of economic collaboration between Nigeria and the EU in areas such as digital education, traditional and renewable energy, and broadband access.

He noted that Nigeria’s economy is currently undergoing substantial and lasting reforms aimed at lifting millions of citizens out of poverty, and he expressed the country’s unwavering determination to succeed.

The EU Commissioner, Ms Urpilainen, commended Nigeria for its pivotal role as a key EU partner, particularly in the realms of politics, economics, and the broader African social landscape.

She elaborated on the EU’s shift away from the traditional donor-recipient relationship with Africa, emphasizing the move towards establishing an equitable and mutually beneficial partnership.

The “Global Gateway” investment program represents a key facet of this new strategy.

Urpilainen expressed her gratitude to President Tinubu for Nigeria’s vital role in supplying essential energy products during the recent standoff with Russia and highlighted the potential for further expansion in the oil and gas partnership.

The EU’s strategy aims to expedite green and digital transformations in EU partner countries, with Nigeria being one of its most strategic allies.

This involves investment in critical infrastructure, energy, transportation, and digital development, as well as human capital, education, and research.

The meeting underscored the significance of the collaborative relationship between Nigeria and the EU, highlighting the mutual benefits of cooperation in promoting democracy, freedom, and economic growth.
