Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari has revealed the Federal Government’s ambitious strategy to bolster food security and end reliance on imported wheat seeds in Nigeria.

Kyari’s plan aims to transition the nation into complete self-sufficiency in wheat production within the next 4-5 years, heralding a significant stride towards food security.

Speaking after an inspection of seed wheat production sites in Kano, Minister Kyari emphasized the importance of local production and declared a 50% subsidy for wheat farmers during the upcoming dry season farming.

This move is expected to boost wheat grain production on a massive scale, both for local consumption and international export.

The government’s commitment to food security has received a major boost from Jigawa State, which has allocated 40,000 hectares of land for wheat farming, bringing the total land set aside to nearly 70,000 hectares.

With a rigorous focus on breeding and foundation seeds, the government seeks to phase out wheat importation and reduce pressure on Nigeria’s foreign reserves.

President Tinubu’s renewed agenda prioritizes food security, making wheat farming a central component.

This groundbreaking initiative not only ensures a sustainable food supply but also offers tremendous potential for economic growth and foreign exports.

Minister Kyari’s vision presents a promising outlook for the agricultural sector and the nation’s future.
