Canada Introduces Open Work Permits for Tech Experts
Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy Welcomes Global Experts with Open Work Permits to Fuel Digital Revolution
In a significant move to bolster its digital workforce, Canada has announced the introduction of open work permits for tech experts as it aims to attract highly skilled professionals from around the world to contribute to the country’s thriving technology sector.
The announcement was made by Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, during the much-anticipated Collision 2023 event.
“We’re enthusiastic about the ambitious goals we have set in immigration because they aren’t just about numbers — they are strategic,” Minister Fraser stated while highlighting the broader vision behind the new policy.
“With Canada’s first-ever immigration tech talent strategy, we’re targeting newcomers that can help enshrine Canada as a world leader in a variety of emerging technologies.”
Under the innovative program, highly skilled professionals in select high-demand occupations will be eligible for open work permits for up to five years.
This will provide them with the flexibility to work in Canada without being tied to a specific employer. The initiative includes employer-specific work permits for the same duration, benefiting talents employed by companies that align with Canada’s industrial innovation objectives.
The introduction of these open work permits is expected to attract a diverse pool of tech experts, enriching Canada’s digital landscape and fostering innovation in various sectors.
Minister Fraser acknowledged the valuable contributions of the tech, start-up, and business communities in shaping this strategy, stating, “I’m grateful for the collaboration of the tech, start-up, and business communities, who have provided valuable insight to develop this strategy.”
This move builds on Canada’s reputation as the top destination for immigrant entrepreneurs.
A recent report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development reaffirmed the country’s appeal, solidifying its status as an attractive location for individuals seeking new opportunities.
The open work permits for tech experts also extend opportunities to holders of the H-1B specialty occupation visa in the United States.
Starting from July 16, H-1B visa holders can apply for Canadian work permits, as well as study or work permit options for their accompanying family members.
It’s important to note that only principal applicants will count towards the application cap of 10,000, excluding their family members.
