Satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX Starlink has rolled out global roaming options for customers traveling to locations where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable.
The company disclosed that global roaming makes use of Starlink’s inter-satellite (aka space lasers) to provide connectivity around the globe. As this is a new technology, users can expect Starlink’s typical high-speed, low-latency service intermixed with brief periods of poor connectivity or none at all.
The new Flat High-performance Starlink allows users to enjoy high-speed, low-latency internet while in motion. With a wide field of view and enhanced GPS capabilities, the Flat High-performance Starlink can connect to more satellites, allowing for consistent connectivity on the go. Starlink further disclosed that the internet service will still be improved over time.
Investors King understands that Starlink Roam provides users the ability to pause and un-pause the service at any time and is billed in one-month increments, allowing users to customize their services to their individual travel needs.
The price for Global Roaming is pegged at $200 (N148,000) per month, which is separate from the one-time purchase of the Starlink hardware worth $599 (N443,260). If users are not fully satisfied with the newly launched Global roaming feature, Starlink reveals that they can return for a full refund of the hardware within 30 days.
However, this new service is only available to users in the U.S. According to the firm, users based outside the U.S will be responsible for acting as the importer of record for the Starlink Kit, which may include the payment of customs duties and import taxes if requires.
The standard Starlink is designed for portable use at any destination where Starlink has active coverage. With an easy setup and breakdown, Starlink delivers high-speed, low-latency internet access within minutes, and packs up quickly when a user wants to move to another location.
The standard Starlink ships immediately and arrives with everything a user needs to get online in a matter of minutes, which includes Starlink, WiFi router, cables and base. The new Flat high-performance Starlink for in-motion use is currently available for order in select markets. Both the Standard and Flat High-performance Starlink require a clear view of the sky to connect.
For Nigerians willing to explore the Satellite Internet, the firm has offered two alternative payment channels to order its hardware. Nigerians could use either Payday or Barter, which are platforms that allow people to create virtual dollar cards and fund them with naira.
