2023 Elections: Nigeria to Close Land Borders for 24 Hours

Ahead of Saturday Election, the Federal Government has disclosed that all land borders will be totally closed from 12 midnight on Saturday to 12 midnight on Sunday.

Nigeria’s Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held this Saturday 25th of February, 2023.

On Thursday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclosed that a total of 87,209,007 Nigerians out of 93.4 million registered citizens are eligible to vote, being the number of collected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu noted that Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos leads the highest number of PVCs collected with 6,214,970, followed by Kano is second with 5,594,193.

According to the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Isah Jere, the total closure of the land borders is to ensure the integrity of the election and be protective security wise. 

He, therefore, instructed all command comptrollers, especially those in the border states to ensure strict enforcement of the order.

Investors King understands that some of the affected land borders include Seme border in Lagos, Ikom border post in Cross River State, the Idiroko border post in Ogun State and the Kamba border post in Kebbi State.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, arrived in Daura, his hometown of Katsina State ahead of Saturday’s elections. The presidential jet touched ground at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport at exactly 4:41 p.m.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has assured of a free, fair and credible election, noting that it is one of the things he would like to be remembered for. 

In a similar development, United States President, Joe Biden, has urged presidential candidates to abide by the peace accord signed on Wednesday to accept the results of Saturday’s election.

He added that elections are a fundamental part of a functioning democracy, and all Nigerians deserve the chance to freely and fairly choose their future.
