The Lagos government says it is planning to construct a new airport in the Lekki-Epe axis of the state.
Investors King learnt that Lagos state will soon commence the construction of a new airport which will be cited along the Lekki-Epe axis of the state.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Public Private Partnerships (PPP), Mr Ope George, at a media parley.
Mr Ope Gorge revealed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government has sought and obtained approval from the Federal Government for the construction of the new airport in Lagos.
According to him, the project, which is expected to take off in the year 2023 will be constructed on 3,500 hectares of land along the Lekki-Epe axis area of the state.
He further declared that the master plan and aeronautical designs are in place; while studies are ongoing about strategies, funding and other issues, after which the project will be taken to the marketplace.
The airport is proposed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and it will be open to both local and foreign investors.
Furthermore, the special adviser also stated that the tender process will be competitive and in accordance with international best practices.
In line with the proposal, Lagos State government would provide the land and other complementary infrastructure while the private partner would construct the airport on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Manage (DBFOM) basis.
It will be recalled that the idea to build a new airport in Lagos State was proposed during the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola. It has however been stalled until now.
Upon completion, the new airport will be strategic for the new business and multinational corporations springing up along the Lekki corridor. The airport will be expected to cater for a minimum of five million passengers yearly which will make it one of the busiest airports in Nigeria.
