YouTube to Revamp Its Partner Program, Enables Monetization of Short Videos

Online video sharing and social media platform Youtube has announced plans to revamp its partners’ program to monetize short videos in order to enable creators to earn revenue.
Youtube’s partner program which began in 2007 has paid creators a cut of Ad revenue generated from their videos but short videos were not allowed to generate revenue.
With the company’s plan to revamp its partner’s program, it announced a new offering called ‘creator music’, which will enable creators to generate revenue on both YouTube’s main platform and Short videos starting from 2023.
According to Youtube, Creator Music is an online catalog that will allow creators to license copyrighted music to use in long-form videos. Creators who don’t want to pay for licenses will be able to share ad revenue with copyright holders.
The ‘creator music’ offering will have a large catalog of songs for creators to browse and use in their long-form videos.
YouTube disclosed that the criteria for its Partner Program will not change for long-form videos. Shorts-focused creators can apply to the program if they have at least 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views over 90 days.
Commenting on the new monetization via a blog post, YouTube’s vice president of creator products, Amjad Hanif, said, “This unique business model means we only succeed when our creators do.
“And creators are succeeding — these creator entrepreneurs are building successful businesses of their own with employees and full-fledged operations.”
With Creator Music, YouTube will be simplifying a complicated process of finding music for video content. “Creators have told us, time and time again, that finding the right song isn’t the hard part. It’s actually figuring out how to license it,” noted Amjad Hanif, VP of Creator Products at YouTube.
