Nigeria, Others to Benefit from U.S. $12 Billion Climate Fund

The United States Government signed several agreements worth billions of dollars with the Federal Government on Tuesday.

Investors King learnt that the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry led a delegation from the United States to some ministries in Abuja.

John Kerry engaged federal government officials on ways to strengthen climate actions. Issues surrounding the 27the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change which is scheduled to take place in Egypt were also discussed.

From 6th to 18th November, world leaders will gather at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Convention Centre (SHICC), Egypt, for COP27 to further continue the discussion on how the world can keep the goal of 1.5℃ alive and avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Some of the Federal Ministries which Kerry visited include the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Petroleum Resources and Ministry of Environment.

While at the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the US envoy stated that Nigeria was one of the nations in Africa that would suffer the most from climate crisis if nothing serious was done to avert the consequences of climate change.

He charged Nigeria to do more on climate action, stating that countries who produce more emissions have to take higher responsibilities if the world must overcome the effects of climate change.

“Nigeria as a major gas producer and the country of so many millions of people, one of the most populous in the world, will help set the direction of our dealing with the climate crisis and so having the right mix of energy sources over the next few years is going to help us to find how the crisis will be dealt with,” he said.

The US envoy who was the Secretary of State during President Barack Obama’s regime noted that Nigeria alongside other countries would benefit from $12 billion dedicated to climate action by the United States Government.
