Nigerian Equities Market Posts Gain on Thursday After Three Consecutive Declines
Equities in Africa’s largest economy Nigeria rebounded slightly on Thursday following three consecutive declines recorded earlier in the week.
Equities in Africa’s largest economy Nigeria rebounded slightly on Thursday following three consecutive declines recorded earlier in the week.
Activity level rose during the trading hours of Thursday as investors transacted 143,288,221 shares estimated at N1.756 billion in 3,874 deals, in contrast to 135.3 million shares worth N1.45 billion that exchanged hands in 3,745 deals on Wednesday.
Jaiz Bank was the most traded equity, accounting for 42,104,327 shares worth N36,607,854.68. For the second consecutive trading session, GTCO was the second most traded equity with 19450689 shares valued at N396,760,979.15.
Breaking down each of the sectors, the banking sector led with a 50 basis points (bps) gain as Unity Bank, Sterling Bank and Zenith Bank closed in the green while FCMB, Fidelity and UBA declined.
The consumer goods sector also closed in the green with 12bps on the back of an 8.39% gain in Honey Flour and an 8.06% surge in Champion.
The oil and gas sector and the industrial sector closed flat.
The market value of all listed equities appreciated by N12 billion from N27.795 trillion it closed on Wednesday to N27.807 trillion on Thursday.
The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) All-Share Index also inched slightly higher by 0.01% to 51,563.73 index points, up from 51,556.54 index points.
The year-to-date gain grew from improved to 20.71% as 15 equities gained against 10 that closed in the red. See other details below.
