Nigerian Stock Investors Lose N551 Billion on Monday as Only 7 Stocks Gain

Stock investors in the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) suffer another round of losses on Monday following a N767 billion loss recorded last week. 

Traders exchanged 345,004,508 shares worth N3.073 billion in 5,075 transactions during the trading hours of Monday. FCMB led the most traded equities in both volume and value with 177.59 million and N668.97 million, respectively. Jaiz Bank led gainers with 5.32% while Dangote Cement topped the losers table with 10% decline.

Breaking down key sectors, the banking sector gained 35 basis points on the back of renewed interest in Jaiz Bank, an increase in the value of Zenith Bank and Sterling Bank.

The consumer goods sector lost 116 basis points as the stocks of Intbrew, Flour Mills, Unilever and Honey Flour closed in the red.

This decline continues with the oil and gas sector as Oando 1.79% dragged on the oil index, shedding 23 basis points. Similarly, the industrial sector dropped 527 basis points on 10%, 4.66% and 1.24% declines in Dangote Cement, Wapco and Cutix, respectively.

The NGX All-Share Index depreciated by 1.97% to 50,756.74 index points, down from 51,778.08 index points it closed on Friday. The market value of all listed equities also declined by N551 billion from N27.914 trillion it settled last week to N27.363 trillion on Monday.

A total of 7 stocks closed in the green, against 31 that closed in the red. The Exchange year-to-date returns moderated to 18.82%. See the details of top gainers, losers and top trades below.
