Nigeria’s Equities Market Manages to Stay Afloat

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) gained marginally on Wednesday following days of consecutive declines.  Investors in the Exchange gained N4 billion to pare losses.

Activity level was mixed as investors traded 267,480,601 shares worth N3.216 billion in 4,099 transactions during the trading hours of Wednesday, against 303.481 million shares worth N3.903 billion that exchanged hands in 4,616 transactions on Tuesday.

The Exchange remained largely subdued due to the lack of policy direction of the current administration. Businesses operating in Nigeria are grappling with a series of issues eroding profitability and dragging on their overall growth.

Only the banking industry seems to be thriving. The banking index gained 25 basis points on Wednesday on positive close in Sterling Bank, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank and UBA. Unity Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank however closed in the red.

The oil and gas and industrial indexes also managed to stay above the water. While the consumer goods index was unchanged. The size of the gains shows the impact of economic uncertainties on the Exchange.

The NGX All-Share index appreciated by 0.02% to 47,163.94 index points, up from 47,156.56 index points it closed on Tuesday. The Market value of all listed equities gained N4 billion from N25.415 trillion on Tuesday to N25.419 trillion on Wednesday.

The Exchange year-to-date return stood at 10.41%. See the details of top gainers and losers below.
