Nigerians interested in going to South Africa can now apply through the new eVisa and receive their visas directly in their emails.
The South African government has officially announced the rolling out of electronic visas for Nigerian citizens and a few other countries. The eVisa system, according to the government of South Africa, should ‘contribute to streamlining and modernising the visa application process for Nigerians.’
Although visas vary for different purposes of travel, the eVisa will be available for tourist and short-term visitors visa category for Nigerians. However, eligibility and requirements may still vary depending on the type of visa a traveller may require.
How to Apply
Getting the eVisa is a pretty straightforward process that requires a completed online form. The eVisa forms can be accessed via any internet-enabled smart device – smartphones, tablets, computers or laptops, etc.
Before filling out the form, a valid Nigerian passport is also required as well as a debit or credit card, and a working email address.

Basic Requirements Before Applying
The requirements for filling out the eVisa application form are the applicant’s basic information such as their name, address, or date of birth. Travellers will also be required to provide their passport details. Candidates are advised to enter the details as correctly as possible as any mistake may lead to a delay in the entire visa process.
Important documents include:
- A Nigerian or other eligible passports with at least 1 month of validity left after the intended date of departure and 2 blank pages
- A completed application form BI-84
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if applicable)
- Supporting documents or written statements confirming the purpose of the visit
- A return or onward ticket if travelling by plane
- Proof of legal guardianship or consent from the guardian if travelling with minors
- Evidence of sufficient funds to cover travel expenses
While the eVisas can be applied for without visiting the South African Consulate office, other visa types may require a physical appointment at the consular office in Lagos.
