Reps Set N3 Trillion Revenue Target, Approves N369 Billion in 2022 Budget For Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS has been allotted to generate a revenue of N3.01 trillion into the federation account in 2022.

Having given the set target, the lower chamber of the Nigerian legislature, the House of Representatives approved the sum of N369 billion as this year’s budget for the Customs Service.

Investors King recalls that in 2021, the NCS surpassed its revenue target of N1.678 trillion as it generated N2.241 trillion at the end of the year. 

The Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, Leke Abejide, gave the budget approval after the Comptroller-General of the service, Hameed Ali, defended the service’s 2022 budget.

Abejide commended the Customs Service for exceeding last year’s target which was raised by the committee from N1.465 trillion to N1.678 trillion.

He urged the service to improve its revenue collections in 2022.

Speaking on the allocations in the budget, the Comptroller-General of the Customs Service pointed that the service officers have no accommodation. 

He decried the lack of accommodation, explaining that “the situation had forced their personnel to go and rest in those smugglers’ accommodations to find shelter; the places are not conducive.”

Ali stated that N45.89 billion was allotted as running cost, N5 billion for staff loan and advances and N12.57 billion for miscellaneous expenses.

He further said, N4.2 billion was allocated for transport allowance of officers on local and international training, while N1.5 billion was earmarked for general maintenance.

The CGC called for the inclusion of accommodation allocation for officers of the service for a conducive working environment.
