Ikeja Hotel, Conoil, Others Gain Failed to Lift Nigerian Stock Market

The gains recorded in stocks of Ikeja Hotel, Conoil, Academy and others were not enough to sustain the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) bullish run. The Exchange closed in the red on Wednesday as 33 stocks shed points against 21 that recorded gains.

Activity at the NGX trading floor was mixed and signaled a possible peak of the ongoing bullish run amid the release of 2021 financial statements. Investors transacted 434,946,390 valued at N6.260 billion in 5,878 deals during the trading hours of Wednesday, against 341,516,320 shares worth N3.692 billion that exchanged hands in 6,417 deals on Tuesday.

The NGX All-Share Index depreciated by 0.38 percent to  46,930.66 index points. The market value of listed equities shed N98 billion from N25.387 trillion on Tuesday to N25.289 trillion on Wednesday.

As expected, the banking index dipped by 139bps on the decline in stocks of UBA, Zenith Bank, Wema Bank, and Access Bank. Ecobank, Jaiz Bank, Union Bank of Nigeria, and Sterling Bank recorded gains.

The industrial index also lost 17bps as Wapco and Cutix closed in the red even though Berger posted a gain. The consumer goods index was flat. Champion, Unilever, Honey Flour and NB were the losers while Interbrew, Nascon and Flour Mill closed in green.

Oil and gas index, however, appreciated by 62 bps on Conoil, Ardova and Seplat 9.96 percent, 0.39 percent and 0.36 percent gains, respectively.

The Exchange year-to-date return moderated to 9.87 percent. See other details below.
