The United Nations on Monday condemned the abduction of hundreds of boys from the Government Science School at Kankara in Katsina State.
In a statement issued by Stéphane Dujarric, Secretary-General, United Nations, the organisation called for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children and for their safe return to the families.
The statement reads in part, “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the 11 December attack on a secondary school in Katsina State, Nigeria, and the reported abduction of hundreds of boys by suspected armed bandits.
“The Secretary-General calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted children and for their safe return to their families. He reiterates that attacks on schools and other educational facilities constitute a grave violation of human rights. He urges the Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible for this act to justice.
“The Secretary-General reaffirms the solidarity and support of the United Nations to the Government and people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime”.
It was reported that the terrible incident happened late Friday when the suspected armed bandit on motorcycles stormed the school premises and immediately engaged the security forces of the school in a fierce shoot out which forced hundreds of students to run for safety in the surrounding bush and forest.
While speaking to the press on Sunday, Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari affirmed that 333 students are still missing.
