The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N1.6 billion as a consultancy services fee for the design of the proposed second runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has stated.

According to the Minister, who attended the virtual meeting held on Wednesday and presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, the approved sum is for the design and pre-contract services for the construction of a new runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

He said “today in council, a memo from aviation was considered and it is the consultancy services for the design and pre-contract services for the construction of a new runway here in Abuja.

“The contract went to a consortium of consultants for the total contract sum of 1.659, 592,908.78. This includes 7.5 percent of VAT also at an exchange rate of N360 to the dollar and this was approved.’’

Sirika further explained that the consultants handling the design comprised of two international companies and one Nigerian firm.

The minister said, “What I want you to assure the public is that a lot of work has been done in this procurement of consultancy services.

“It will be fast-tracked and it is the intention of the ministry to conclude before the end of the year so that with the balance of money that we have in the budget, we can appoint a contractor and commence the construction of the second runway.

“We hope to conclude the second runway if awarded before the end of the life of this administration.”
