- COVID-19: Nigerians Battle More Deadly Virus, Hunger Virus
We are not only on lockdown but also we have been locked out, an average Nigerian is standing between two evil, Corona Virus and Hunger Virus.
The government is majorly focused on battling Corona Virus which seems to be their bigger evil while an average Nigerian sees none as lesser nor bigger evil but rather as two evil that must be overcome by all means possible.
This situation, however, has placed a microscope in the hands of all Nigerians to see a more precise and detailed lapse in our government, community and individual as masses strive for survival amid hunger and zero movements.
The early phase of the lockdown sets in motion price hikes of most commodities, especially foodstuff, face mask, hand gloves and hand sanitizers. The prices of these items were increased by more than 300 percent from their initial price, this was without any government memo or law. At that period, it was glaring that an average man’s problem is caused by the same man in his stratum. As the saying goes “na man dey do man”.
Few days into the lockdown, the second virus sets in, communities begin to lament and it became the survival of the heartless, fittest and most dubious with armed robbers storming Lagos communities turning Lagosians to overnight vigilantes to protect whatever they have left. Everyman wants to survive without considering the adverse effect of his action on his neighbor or community.
Nigerians later shifted focus to policymakers to step in, save and cure that one hunger virus that they have the power to reduce its effect on citizens. A glimpse of hope was seen as funds were donated by corporate firms and individuals but then the citizens realized how difficult it is for a leopard to change its spot, the more dangerous evil we have been battling with, “corruption and bad government” stuck its head out and dashed the hope off all concerned and affected Nigerians.
Nigerians are on lockdown to save them from Corona virus but locked in at the mercy of Hunger Virus and Corruption Virus.
