The fast-spreading COVID-19 has hits Ethiopian like other African nations, forcing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to declare a state of emergency on Wednesday.

“Considering the gravity of the #COVID19, the government of Ethiopia has enacted a State of Emergency,” Abiy’s office said.

Africa’s most populous nation with over 110 million people has recorded more than 52 confirmed cases and two deaths, according to the nation’s health ministry.

The country has already closed down schools, banned public gatherings and forced employees to work from home in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.

The Prime Minister did not state what other steps she plans to take as the nation declare a state of emergency.
