Airtel Nigeria, one of the leading telecommunications companies in Nigeria, on Wednesday announced it has adjusted data price to ensure more Nigerians stay connected.

According to the telecommunications giant, price of most data bundle have been dropped. For instance, a 15GB data bundle now goes for N5,000 per month while 6GB goes for just N1,500 per week.

While the company said it plans to continue on this path of affordability and quality internet for all Nigerians, the drop in price was after Vodacom South Africa was compelled to drop price on data following investigations conducted by Competition regulator of South Africa in December 2019.

The regulator discovered that Vodacom and MTN charged South Africans more than other markets they operated. Therefore, they insisted they offer a cost-reflective rate. Hence, Vodacom South Africa reached an agreement with the regulator to lower data price by 30 percent on Tuesday. Airtel Nigeria likely made the adjustment to avoid a similar fate with South African telecom giants.

Speaking on the reduction, Dinesh Balsingh, Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria, said “As the preferred mobile internet services provider, Airtel is committed to offering superior value to telecoms consumers across the country and our newly revamped data plans is a testament to our commitment to empower our customers. With these new data plans, our customers now have higher data allowance to do much more and get more out of life; to succeed, to become more productive and to do so much more.”
