In a bid to improve ease of doing business in the maritime sector, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has perfected plans to commence online registration of ship.

Dr Dakuku Peterside, Director-General, NIMASA, made the statement in Lagos during an interactive session with shipowners.

He said the initiative will enhance the sector growth and move the nation’s maritime sector a step closer to attaining a world-class ship registry.

Peterside explained that automation was the only way to improve the registry and ensure Just-In-Time process of all necessary documents.

“Our principal aim is to achieve online electronic registration, accept electronic copies of documents and issue electronic certificates.

“Our goal as a maritime safety administration is to create a world-class ship registry, which will be attractive to shipowners, with the aim of maintaining the influence of Nigeria in evolving international commercial and regulatory environment for shipping,” he added.

According to him, in 2019, the nation registry attracted two high index capacity vessels – Egina FPSo and MT Ultimate, this latest move will further deepen the nation’s registry and boost confidence.
