An Air Peace flight on Tuesday suffered engine failure, few minutes after taking off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The Owerri-bound flight which had 90 passengers and six crew members on board, departed the airport at about 07.35 am and made an air return to base at 8.06 am.

The incident which could have led to tragedy was well managed as the aircraft landed safely without any record of injury or death among the occupants.

Confirming the report, Stanley Olisa, Corporate Communications Executive, Air Peace, explained that the aircraft was already airborne when the pilot noticed a change in the parameter of one of the engines and aborted the flight.

“He reported the incident; took precautionary measures and returned to base in line with Air Peace safety operational procedures,” Olisa said.

Olisa apologized to the affected customers, assuring that the airline would continue to maintain high safety standards in its operations.

“Air Peace apologizes for the incident and assures its customers and other Nigerians that it continues to maintain a high-safety standard in its operations,” he said.

In a statement released by the General Manager, Public Affairs of the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Mr Tunji Oketunbi said: “The Accident Investigation Bureau, Nigeria has been notified on the 5th November 2019 of a serious incident involving a Boeing 737-500 aircraft operated by Air Peace, with registration marks, 5N-BUJ.

“The aircraft, which departed Murtala Muhammad Airport at 07:35 local time was en route Owerri from Lagos with 90 passengers and 6 crew members on board.

He further explained that “the information provided by the Air Traffic Control (ATC), the flight crew declared engine failure at 07:47 local time and subsequently made an air return to Lagos.

“The aircraft landed safely at 08:06 local time. All the occupants disembarked with no injury.

“As the sole agency mandated to undertake the investigation of aircraft accidents and serious incidents, the Bureau wants the public to know that it would be open to receiving any video clip, relevant evidence or information that may assist in this investigation,” AIB General manager said.
