  • Xenophobia: Like Nigeria, Malawi Commences Evacuation

The Malawian Government has commenced the evacuation of its citizens from South Africa following the recent Xenophobic attacks on African immigrants living in South Africa.

Mr. Wilson Moleni, the Secretary for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Malawi, said two buses were hired to repatriate nationals who were displaced.

In the statement released on Thursday, Moleni said the 76 Malawians, who were willing to return home, left South Africa on Tuesday and would arrive Malawi on Thursday.

It should be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria also ordered the immediate evacuation of Nigerians willing to return home from South Africa a week ago.

According to Malawi High Commission in South Africa, about 113 Malawians whose properties were burnt are stranded and currently displaced.

He, however, said on 76 of 113 displaced Malawians want to return home at this time.

“Out of the 113 displaced Malawians, 76 expressed willingness to return home,” Moleni stated.

The remaining 37 are kept in temporary shelters set up by South Africa’s disaster management authorities in Katlehong town, Johannesburg.
