An Air Peace aircraft was partially damaged on Tuesday after it made an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Boeing 737 aircraft with registration number 5N-BQO, from Port Harcourt was said to have experienced turbulence due to the weather and the pilot reportedly requested a longer runway, where it eventually landed.

The airline’s Chief Operating Officer, Mrs Toyin Olajide, while confirming the incident, said the pilot, Capt. Sinmisola Ajibola, noticed sudden weather changes when approaching Lagos and demanded to land on the international runway, which is longer and wider than the domestic runway.

“After landing safely and rolling to the runway exit, the nose gear developed a problem and partially collapsed. The crew notified the airport authorities who quickly ensured the safe disembarkation of the passengers,” the airline said.

The Commissioner, Accident Investigation Bureau, Mr Akin Olateru, said the agency had been notified and had commenced investigation into the incident.

“The aircraft with 133 passengers and six crew members on board was on approach to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos from Port Harcourt. From the information provided, the aircraft nose wheel collapsed on landing on the runway 18R and the nose wheel tyre sheared off,” he said.

He stated that there was a minor injury but no fatality.

Olateru said in the course of investigation, the agency would be open to receiving video clips, relevant evidence or information any member of the public might have of the accident.
