- Google Nigeria Plans to Train Nigerians
In a bid to enhance productivity and stimulate job creation, Google Nigeria on Wednesday announced the launch of Google Digital skills for Africa programme in Aba.
The programme scheduled to kick off in Aba and other neighbouring towns in Abia state will focus on training entrepreneurs on relevant digital skills, Mrs Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, the Head of Brand and Reputation at Google (Sub-Saharan Africa) stated.
“The programme is aimed at offering training courses to help individuals and communities develop and grow digital skills, find jobs, and advance in their careers,” she said.
“The youth make up 60 per cent of Africa’s unemployed; developing digital entrepreneurship and creating new job opportunities for them is critical to Africa’s transformative growth.
“We are doing this because we believe that more needs to be done to empower young Africans to succeed in the digital world.”
Nigeria’s unemployment rate rose to 23.1 percent or 20.9 million in the third quarter of 2018. One of the highest unemployment rates in the world.
But the fact that youth unemployment/underemployment rate stood at 55.4 percent, higher than the national rate of 43.3 percent, forced many corporations to embark on training and job creation programme for the youths.
Still, new job creation remains low as most businesses are struggling to grow due to various economic challenges.
