• Boko Haram Kills Over 20,000 People in Nigeria – WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said the Boko Haram crisis in North-east Nigeria has caused more 20,000 deaths.

The organisation, who has been present in the region in the last three years, complained about the dilapidated health systems in the affected areas, saying it was difficult to cope with the upsurge of treatable ailment.

It said the over a decade old crisis has led to frequent disease outbreaks in the region and requires more attention and manpower.

However, it said in spite of the challenges, the organisation has provided technical leadership with coordinated health partners and increase access to essential health services.

The health organisation said it has been able to strengthen disease surveillance and health information management, prevent and control public health risks, and strengthen health systems in the crisis-ridden region.

It further said since it intervention three years ago in the North-east region, 2.5 million children have been offered routine immunization by mobile health teams, 2.1 million people provided with necessary health humanitarian support.
