Four Power Plants Shut Down in Nigeria, Power Generation Drops

  • Four Power Plants Shut Down in Nigeria, Power Generation Drops

Power generation dropped to 3,930 megawatts (MW) following break down of four power plants in Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria.

Nigeria’s grid operator said on Friday that a leaking gas pipeline forced the closure of four power stations in the country.

The four power stations are Egbin, Omotosho, Olorunsogo and Paras power stations.

According to Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the four plants were totally shut down on Thursday for emergency maintenance on the leaking pipeline supplying them.

In a statement issued by the transmission company, the leakage was from the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System, but that operator, Nigerian Gas Company, had already repaired the affected pipeline.

“Repairs have been completed and the pipeline is currently being pressurised prior to resumption of gas supply to the affected power stations,” TCN said in a statement.

NGC, a subsidiary of state oil company NNPC, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The power sector lost an estimated N1.407 billion due to insufficient gas supply, distribution, and transmission infrastructure.
