Unsolicited Messages: 12 Million Subscribers Report Telcos to NCC

  • Unsolicited Messages: 12 Million Subscribers Report Telcos to NCC

About 12 million telecommunications subscribers have asked service providers not to disturb them with unsolicited text messages and calls, the Nigerian Communications Commission has said.

Executive Vice Chairman at NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said this when he met with Kano actors and film makers (popularly known as Kannywood) in Kano, according to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday.

The NCC boss urged the artists and film makers to spread the message of consumer protection tools of the commission such as 2442 Do-not-Disturb short code and 622 toll free line.

Danbatta told the group that about 12 million subscribers had activated the 2442 short code from less than 500, 000 before the commencement of the Year of the Consumer campaign which the regulatory agency ran in 2017.

The NCC boss also urged them to help the country to attain necessary change by churning out films whose messages target positive attitudinal and transformational changes.

Danbatta hailed the Kannywood industry for coming of age, adding that the commission appreciated the critical role the artists play in reaching out to the target audience and hence the choice of popular actor, Ali Nuhu, and Helen Paul, from Nollywood as the faces of its Year of the Consumer Campaign.

He said, “We deliberately made them our ambassadors. And we know that Ali Nuhu is your ambassador, too, as he represents you. So this commission has always explored synergies like this, in line with our critical stakeholder engagement agenda.”

The NCC helmsman also enjoined the artists to support the government by producing more films with a moral lesson, noting that films were not only known for entertainment but also for the lessons they taught.
