The Ondo State House of Assembly has impeached both the Speaker of the house and his Deputy on Friday.

Sunday Olajide, Assemblyman from APC-Akure Constituency 2, moved the motion for the impeachment, while Oluyede Feyide, APC-Ose Constituency, seconded the motion that ousted the Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Bamidele Oloyelogun and Deputy Speaker, Iroju Ogundeji.

Following the impeachment, the lawmakers immediately elected Olamide George, Assemblyman representing APC-Akure North Constituency, as the new Speaker of the house.

Assemblyman, Abimbola Fajolu, representing APC-Ile Oluji/Okeigbo Constituency, was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jumoke Akindele, representing APC-Okitipupa Constituency 2, became the Acting Speaker during the rowdy plenary session that led to the emergence of the two new leaders.

The new Speaker, Olumide George, said the impeachment was to correct certain lapses in the house and not a witch hunt.

A total of 18 lawmakers out of the 26 members of the House voted to impeach the Speaker and his Deputy.
